How to Sell Your Car to Hwy 84 Motors

Hwy 84 Motors · · 6 min read

Selling a car on your own means listing photos, calls from strangers, and test drives with people you just met, usually spread over weeks. Some folks don’t mind any of that. If you’d rather make one trip and be done with it, selling to a dealer is the short version. Here’s how it goes at Hwy 84 Motors.

Everything starts with the short form on our We Buy Cars page. Tell us about your vehicle and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Cash sale or trade-in, it’s the same conversation, because selling or trading in starts with the same short form. Below is what to have ready, how the review works, and what to bring when you drive in to Abilene or Lawn.

The three steps, in plain words

The form asks for the year, make, model, mileage, and condition of your vehicle. Photos help but aren’t required. That’s step one, and it’s the shortest part of the whole deal.

Step two happens on our end. We look over the details you sent, check them against what vehicles like yours are bringing, and get back to you as soon as we can. There’s no set schedule to promise here, and we won’t invent one. The number comes out of the review, so we’d rather do it right than do it fast.

Step three is your decision: sell it or trade it. Take the cash offer, or put the value toward another vehicle in our inventory. Nothing obligates you either way for having asked.

What to have ready before you start

You can fill the form out from the kitchen table, and it goes quicker with a few things in front of you:

None of it has to be polished. Records deserve a special mention, though: a stack of oil change receipts tells us the vehicle was looked after, and that works in your favor at review time. The full picture of which details move the number is its own subject, and we cover it in what affects your vehicle’s cash offer.

  • The year, make, model, and trim (the trim badge is usually on the tailgate or trunk lid)
  • Current mileage, straight off the odometer
  • A plain description of the condition, the good and the bad
  • Service records if you’ve kept them, even a folder of receipts
  • A few photos if taking them is easy: the outside, the interior, anything worth pointing out

Be straight about the condition

The condition field is where sellers either help themselves or cost themselves. An accurate description gets you a number that holds up when we see the vehicle in person, and that alone is reason to be thorough.

So put all of it in. The check engine light that comes and goes. The AC that quits in July traffic. Hail dents from that spring storm, the tear in the driver’s seat, tires getting close to the wear bars. We buy vehicles with problems all the time, and a problem listed up front is simply priced in from the start. If you’re not sure how to word something, plain beats polished. Runs and drives, needs front tires soon, slow to start on cold mornings: that’s the level of detail that helps, in whatever words you’d use over the phone.

Leaving things out buys you nothing, because everything surfaces once we look the vehicle over. A problem discovered in person means the number gets reworked while you stand there, and nobody enjoys that conversation. Describe the vehicle you actually own, and the figure you hear is one you can plan around.

Title basics, in plain language

Paperwork is where sellers get nervous, so here it is without the legalese. If you own the vehicle outright and the title is in your name, you’re in the simplest spot there is. Bring the title and your driver’s license, and the rest is signatures.

If you’re still making payments, your lender is holding the title, and that’s normal. It doesn’t stop the sale. Call the lender and ask for a payoff figure, which is just the amount it takes to close out the loan as of a given date. Bring that number with you. If the offer covers the payoff, the difference comes back to you; if the payoff runs higher, you’d cover the gap. Knowing the figure before you drive in means the math happens once, at the desk, with no guessing.

Odd situations come up, and they’re rarely dead ends. A title in a family member’s name, a lost title, an out-of-state title: each has its own steps, so call us at 325-480-2444 before you make the drive and we’ll tell you what your situation needs. And bring every key, remote, and fob you have. Spares carry real value, and they’re the single easiest thing to forget in a kitchen drawer.

Selling and trading are the same conversation

Plenty of people come in planning to sell and drive out in something newer instead. Both paths run through the same form and the same review. The only difference is where the value lands: in your pocket, or on the paperwork for the next vehicle.

Trading carries one practical advantage worth understanding: the value of your current vehicle works like a down payment. As we laid out in our down payment guide, money down shrinks the amount you finance and the monthly payment along with it. The vehicle sitting in your driveway may already be most of the down payment you were trying to save.

If the next vehicle needs financing, sort that piece before you come in. Pre-qualifying takes a few minutes and doesn’t ask for your Social Security Number, and it tells you what you’re working with before the trade value even enters the math. The difference between that step and a full application is laid out in pre-qualification vs credit application.

One trip from anywhere in the Big Country

Sellers come to us from all over: Tuscola, Clyde, Winters, Coleman, Anson, Cisco, Eastland, Ballinger, Sweetwater, Brownwood, San Angelo. From the closer towns you’re an hour out, from the farther ones like San Angelo and Brownwood a bit more, and the form is what keeps it to one trip either way. Fill it out before you leave the house, and by the time you head our way the back-and-forth is already done.

A word on timing. We’re open Monday through Friday, 9 to 4, and Saturdays by appointment, so call ahead at 325-480-2444 and we’ll have someone ready for you and point you to the right location. There are two: 6424 US Highway 84 in Lawn, just south of Abilene, and 2609 S 1st Street in Abilene. Directions to both are on the locations page. Saturday appointments exist for exactly this kind of errand: if the workweek keeps you on a job site until dark, call and set a time, and the weekend trip works the same as any other.

If you live outside town and plan to replace the vehicle on the same trip, our guide to buying a used car when you live outside Abilene shows how to do the shopping half online before you ever leave home.

The short version

Fill out the form, describe the vehicle honestly, and have the title or payoff figure sorted before you drive in. That’s the whole job on your end. We handle the review, we get in touch, and when you arrive, the vehicle just has to match what you told us.

And if the car has been sitting in the driveway while you make up your mind, let that settle it. A vehicle you don’t drive still costs insurance and registration, and it isn’t gaining value out there. Tell us what you’ve got and find out what it’s worth.
